The Languages of Pao is Jack Vance; the story is probably based off the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis but don't worry, it doesn't get in the way too much. I re-read it recently, because the concept of "Emeritus" came up again; I left some additional quotes there.Stripped of that element it is a quasi-usual Vance potboiler, which is to say, better than most people's best efforts. Briefly, towards the end, there is a hint of recognition of the philosopher-king problem; perhaps even with a neat inversion of it. Or maybe I only see my own obsessions.
