My old running shoes, which I used as trail shoes, were in a pretty ropey state at the end of 2023 (see
here and
here) and even worse in 2024, somewhat confused by my having two pairs. Anyway, they were in poor shape. So it is time to buy some more "alpine" shoes (I already have new running shoes, Altera). I realised that what I probably wanted were "trail" or "approach" shoes, and eventually having tried various places settled on what I could get, some Brooks Cascadia 18 (https://www.brooksrunning.com/en_gb/mens/trail-running-shoes/cascadia-18/110426.html) trail shoes. £94 on sale, weight 712g the pair. My old Adizero's were ~500g the pair, but these are somewhat stouter in construction (thus sparing my feet against rocks, I hope) and have a more respectable sole.
From the side you can see the sole, somewhat.
They have less pointless plastic foam build-up than most, thankfully.
Speculatively, they might take my new Leopard crampons, it will be interesting to try that out.
Update: first summer
They served me well for a first summer; here's what they look like after France / Italy and Tirol:
